INTRODUCTION

The poll “Violence upon same-sex oriented persons” was conducted by Labris – the lesbian rights group from Belgrade, Lambda, LGBT Human Rights and Queer Culture Centre from Nis and Novi Sad Lesbian Organization – NLO from Novi Sad during February 2005. During this period 71 participants, gays and lesbians were interviewed: the territory of Nis (N = 25), the territory of Novi Sad (N = 17) and the territory of Belgrade (N = 29).

The aim of this pilot research was collecting information on violence upon same-sex oriented persons in order to inform the media, relevant institutions, NGOs in the country and international organizations on one of the crucial disturbing factors for realization of lesbian and gay existence, as well as to create a new, thorough questionnaire and research with the same subject.

The poll has been conducted in the form of interview by the activists of the mentioned organizations. Mostly gays and lesbians who have contacts with LGBT organizations or they are themselves activists were have participated in the poll.

The biased sample was taken, and since there are no reasons to presume that the used sample is representative for the whole population, the conclusions that are deducted are framed only to that part of the population which this sample is representative for.

There are many gays and lesbians living in the cities where the poll has been conducted, who had internalized fundamental and omnipresent discrimination upon gays and lesbians by the dominant heterosexual culture – which ignores gay and lesbian existence and makes them invisible. It was not possible to approach those gays and lesbians and to include them in the survey in this way.

After the processing the data, the following results were obtained:
