Statement regarding presentation of Annual report for the year 2010.



Labris presented annual report about position of LGBTIQ population in Serbia and announced Registered partnership law.

 

Labris report about condition of LGBT human rights in Serbia for the year 2010.  is presented today at 11 am , in the hotel “Prague” conference room.


Members of human rights organizations, other LGBT organizations, as well as the professors of Law Faculty and University ombudsman, Branko Rakic were at the presentation.


For five years in a row Labris regulates and presents annual reports about cases of violence and discrimination against LGBT population and relation of the state institutions and political parties towards this population.


Labris coordinator for lobbying and advocating program said  report indicates that the institutions of the state supported human rights of LGBT people more than in the past, primarily when it comes to the process of organizing Pride parade 2010. and that small step has been made regarding overall improvement in position of LGBT population.


However, even though relation of the state and politicians towards members of LGBT community has been slightly improved, they are still victims of discrimination and homophobia almost on daily basis, and their problems cannot be solved just by organizing Pride parade.


Labris coordinator also announced that legal proposal about registered partnership for same sex couples has been prepared and that is will be presented in the beginning of following month.


Zorica Mrsevic, professor at Faculty for European legal and political studies at University Singidunum, and advisor at Institute of social sciences in Belgrade  spoke about ignorant relation of the state institutions toward LGBT rights, indicating the need for processing cases of violence , problematic nature of selective applying of justice and need for sensitization of people employed in the institutions.


Professor Mrsevic also informed us about report made by Commissioner for human rights from the Council of Europe, Thomas Hammarberg after the results of research about discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity  were announced.


Goran Miletic, program director for West Balkans indicated the need of organizing Pride parade and the necessity of more systematic approach from the state institutions when it comes to the LGBT rights.


Milan Antonijevic, from committee of lawyers for human rights - YUCOM spoke about verdicts and trials in progress for riots during Pride parade 2009., and 2010. and warned of passivity and lack of interest of the judiciary as two key problems in regard to protection of LGBT rights.
