Declaration - Let there be the Pride Parade
Saturday, 23 May 2009 14:54
We, the above signatories, Welcome the adoption of the Anti discrimination Law as a sign of readiness by the state institutions to lay down the foundations for the protection of rights of society’s minority groups, while aware that the state and each of us individually can and must influence the decreasing of discrimination but more importantly the building of the tolerant society which respects universal human rights and values.
We do not accept the possibility that in 2009 in Serbia or ever again, human rights of any citizen is denied or withheld just because of the fact that they are different in any personal way or reason.
We do not accept that lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in Serbia are insulted, discriminated and are always constant targets of hatred and violence.
We support LGBT persons in their persistent struggle for their rights and equality in society and present their goals through regular, permissible ways, through various activities, public debates, peaceful protests and gatherings.
Citizens of Serbia, regardless of their sexual orientation, will express their legitimate pursuit in their struggle for reaching complete equality in the society at a public event in 2009.
We wish to remind that 2009 marks 40th anniversary of the global LGBT movement which grew out of peaceful, female and anti-fascist movement.
We would also like to remind that the highest legal documents of the Republic of Serbia and international conventions and charters our country has signed, completely affirm the right to a public assembly and fully prohibit violence caused by hatred.
We are no longer accepting homophobia and excuses!
Pride parade “Belgrade Pride” will be held in 2009 and we are proudly supporting this important and brave steps of our fellow citizens, LGBT persons, their friends, family, cousins and their colleagues in the fight for equality and freedom.
Let there be Pride Parade – Belgrade Pride!
